I have DSS

I know you haven't heard about it yet. It will appear on DSM-5. It's Daylight Sleeping Syndrome.
I wake up in the middle of the night and cannot go back to sleep. I have to wait till the day breaks. Although I feel like sleeping something keeps preventing me to go to bed and sleep.
So I study, blog comment on blogs, listen to musics, dance and... jump.
I love to dance and I love to jump.
When I was a little girl I remember I loved jumping. I'm a little too old now but when I start jumping all that good feeling appears again.
You have to do nothing but let you body do the job. Give it a try if you also liked jumping.
Quite therapeutic but the best thing is forget about therapy and jump.

Stop Violence against women

Try it! It works.

This will keep you busy for a while, trying to outsmart your foot, but you can't.

1. While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.

2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand.

Your foot will change direction. . . . . .
and there's nothing you can do about it!

Côte d'Ivoire wants to donate to me!

I've been receiving this e-mail for more than 2 months:

From Mrs Susan Morgan
N[38 Rue Des Martyrs Cocody
Abidjan,Cote d'Ivoire
ATTN
DEAREST ONE OF GOD
I am the above named person from Kuwait. I am married to Mr.Abram Morgan, who worked with Kuwait embassy in Ivory Coast for nine years before he died in the year 2004. We were married for eleven years without a child. He died after a brief illness that lasted for only four days.
Before his death we were both born again Christian. Since his death I decided not to remarry or get a child outside my matrimonial home which the Bible is against. When my late husband was alive he deposited the sum of $2. 5 Million (Two Million Five Hundred U.S. Dollars) in the bank here in Abidjan in suspense account.
.........................................
Presently, the fund is still with the bank. Recently, my Doctor told me that i have serious sickness which is cancer problem. The one that disturbs me most is my stroke sickness. Having known my condition I decided to donate this fund to a church or individual that will utilize this money the way I am going to instruct herein. Please assure me that you will act accordingly as I Stated herein. Hoping to receive your reply.

Remain blessed in the Lord.
Yours in Christ,
Mrs susan morgan

Now I'm receiving the same message from this woman:

DEAREST ONE OF GOD

(same content but now it's in bold letters)

Remain blessed in the Lord.

What a terrible disease! It kills in 4 days! Both women have cancer and stroke.
Dear Lord! Is that the way you treat your followers
?
I didn't reply. But who knows it would be a good way to make ends meet? Of course I'll work in the name of God!
But I believe you should donate to Philip Dawdy's Furious Seasons. Just press the Pay Pall button on the right side of his blog.
The good new is that there's nobody needing money in Côte d'Ivoire"
:)

We didn't even say goodbye...

I've just left a comment on a friend's blog and I kept on thinking about my ex-husband. I don't like this "ex-husband" title but it's the only way I can convey that we were meant to each other.
Of course there were many things about him I dislike and many he didn't like on me.
But we had the connection on almost everything.
Depression came and lasted for 1 year. then the maniac appeared. He got hospitalized and for 6 months he didn't got better.
A psychiatry friend decided to try another hospital and they gave him lithium. In a few weeks he reached balance and got out of the maniac phase.
But he left and I let him go.
It still hurts because it was not because love has ended. Circumstances beyond control has put an end on us.
I know he also feels sorry for it all. We didn't even say goodbye, there was not a conversation about ... nothing.
He got married and has a son. I feel glad he did.
Not that glad... because... you know why...

WHy go... home

She scratches a letter into a wall made of stone
Maybe someday another child won't feel as alone as she does
It's been two years, and counting, since they put her in this place
She's been diagnosed by some stupid fuck, and mommy agrees,
yeah...
Whoa...yeah...hey yeah yeah...
Why go home... (3x)

She seems to be stronger, but what they want her to be is weak
She could play pretend, she could join the game, boy
She could be another clone...ooh...whoa...ah yeah...

Ooh...
Why go home? (4x)
What you taught me...put me here...don't come visit...mother...
Sting me...

Whoa...ooh...
Why go home? (4x)
What you taught me...put me here...don't come visit...mother, mother,
yeah...
Why go home? (7x)
Whoa...

This is Pearl Jam back on the beginning of the nineties. Seattle.. I guess everybody remember the grunge movement perhaps Nirvana being the most famous. Kurt on drugs, anybody helped?
Do you believe that this rehab thing is working? NO!
I just want to ask what are we doing with your children and teenagers.
It's hard to be a teenager I guess we all remember. With the future these kids have towards them I wonder it's harder. It's harder on this beginning of the century for people who are older but lost their jobs. What are you doing with people's future and lives?
GIVE A FUTURE TO these KIDS! Not drugs!
Where's the anti-street-drugs campaign
? But a good campaign not these moral judgments you do.
Is the White House and all of you who make money with illegal drugs able to give up your profits
?
Where is the explanation on psychiatric drugs to parents?
Are you able to give up your profit
?
AMERICA!
STOP DRUGGING YOUR CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS!
USA! Stand up! Speak up!

You know what?
My sister spent 6 months in USA back on the seventies.
She came to Brazil addicted to LSD and other drugs.
You've destroyed part of my sister's life!
You've destroyed part of a whole generation back in the seventies.
Black panthers included. Yep! CIA remember
?

AMERICA!

This is the reason, Gabeira, I cannot support your campaign. I don't like drugs. If someone use drug just for fun once in a while I have nothing to do with it. But both, street-drugs and psychiatric drugs are destroying lives! Can't you see it?

I was half an hour patient on a ward

I’ve remembered this “story” yesterday and now I have to tell. I went to a psychiatrist of a mental institution that is in front of my house. He changed all my prescription. I looked at it and said to myself “-This is not a good idea!” But we trust physicians more than our instincts. Now I know I have to trust my instincts more than physicians.
He took away 200 mg of Seroquel and reduced the Efexor dose and changed something I cannot remember.
I’ve spent three days without sleeping.
On the third day I felt terrible. If I spend 1 day without sleeping I feel as if I was drunk. I don’t function normally and with all my energy.
So I went to see the psychiatrist. I was crying and feeling terrible. He looked at me and said “-You have to be hospitalized. I’ll try to find a bed for you.”
He didn’t say why I had to be on that place. He just said I had to spend 3 days there. I’ve said I had a dog… lol as if he cares.
He finally found the bed and I was taken to the ward by a nurse. I don’t mind and have good relations with people who are on mental institutions. They talked to me with respect and asked “-What are you doing here? What’s your disease?”
I don’t know.
I smoke and after 20 minutes I felt like having coffee. I went to the door that separate normal people from crazy ones and it was half opened.
I asked with a calm voice: “-I would like to have a coffee.”
There were two people who were sat with their back towards me. They didn’t reply.
I asked again, and again. They didn’t even look back. I started to feel nervous and angry. I said in a louder voice: “-I want to have some coffee.” No reply.

They talked to each other and it seems to me that they were saying something like “-These crazy people are such a bore!” I started to hit the steal door with my ring and I said that I wanted to have a coffee…

It was when one of them said; “-You cannot go out. You’re an intern now.”

I beg your pardon! ?

I hadn’t signed anything claiming I wanted volunteered psychiatrist treatment. I started screaming that I wanted to have the coffee.

All of a sudden a woman appeared. She was a giant for me. She restrained me from my back. I said: “-Wait! I’m not crazy and I’m here…” not a good sentence when you’re on a mental institution ward. A patient said: “-They want to use her as a guinea-pig!” I remember it quite clearly, even the voice. She saved me! Also my dog for I kept remembering she was alone.
So I said I wanted to talk to the psychiatrist that had made a questionnaire after I was put on this ward. She had asked me if I… heard voices. That was the first and only time a psychiatrist asked me this question and it gave me the exact measure on how these psychiatrists knows nothing about anything. You can tell by a person way of expressing and so many other signs whether the person is a psychotic or a neurotic. I can tell! How can it be that a psychiatrist cannot distinguish after years working with these diseases
? I can even tell when someone is playing crazy. Yep! There are people on this street that behaves as if they were crazy because of the two mental hospitals we have here. They do it to ask for money.

After the giant finally stopped restraining me – I can tell you that it’s one of the most invasive ways to treat anyone and you feel terrible, you feel as if you are nothing - I’ve got my cell phone and said I was going to call my lawyer.
After three minutes the psychiatrist who asked me if I hear voices appeared and I told her I wanted to get out of that place.
She said supper was on the way and I don’t remember what else for the door was opened and I went straight home.

I’ve cried, and I’ve cried and I’ve cried… This is such a terrible experience to be restrained. Jesus! If they did it to me because I asked to have a coffee I cannot imagine how they treat people who are passing trough a crisis.

The psychiatrist who told me I had to stay there didn’t appear. I met him for a second time after being put on the ward.

He told me: “-you’ll have to stay here for 2 months.”

I beg your pardon! ? Wasn’t it 3 days?

I took my old prescription and things got back to normal. I slept and felt fine again.

I still see this psychiatrist and I never asked him about it all. I’ve just talked to him when I was feeling fine and went to talk to the psychiatrist who asked me if I hear voices.

I acted like a lunatic. I told her I hadn’t signed anything; and the whole thing was a bad use of power;… I don’t remember…; told the parent with a daughter to be careful with that hospital because… I was very angry to be in a mental institution…. and she got nervous because she knew that it was a huge… mistake? Can we say it is a mistake?

The next section I reported the psychiatrist who had the brilliant idea to put me there. He apologized. At least he apologized.

But I have no idea why all this has happened and it makes me wonder what happen to those people I use to visit on this ward when they are not having sun.

I’ve reported it to the government.

Of course I’ve got no reply.

I'm sad...

I'm feeling sad right now. Too much hideous stories. Too few action to try to start changes.
It's impossible not to feel sad.
It will go away. But now I'm sad.

Candance Downing

Just another story of a 12 years old girl who killed herself.
From Alliance for Human Research part of the CBS test:

WASHINGTON, June 26, 2008(CBS) This report was created in special collaboration with BusinessWeek.

For five years, Mathy Downing has struggled for an explanation. Why would her daughter Candace - a happy 12-year-old - hang herself from the bedpost, leaving no notes and no clue? "We had no warning," Downing said. "Absolutely no warning."
The Downings blame Candace's suicide on the antidepressant drug Zoloft. They wondered why the doctor gave such a powerful drug when Candace's only complaint was anxiety in school. Then recently, in their lawsuit against the doctor, they think they found an answer, CBS News correspondent Wyatt Andrews reports.
"I said, 'wait a second . what?'" said Candace's father, Andy Downing. Wait a second, because Candace's doctor, Matheme Selassie, had been paid around $12,000 making speeches touting Zoloft, with some of the payments coming from Pfizer, the drug's manufacturer.

The Downings believe the money influenced the prescription. "Did the doctor tell you he was taking Pfizer money?" Andrews asked Mathy Downing. "Absolutely not," she said. "How dare he! How dare he take money for a medication that killed our daughter."

The dangers of clinical trials

Today I'm angry! Very angry!
After reading some stuffs on FS i've got infuriated and I'm thinking about many problems at the same time.
Clinical trials. Remember the TGN-1412 scandal
?
Refresh your memory here.

"
When potentially hazardous drugs are being tested, it is common to use patients rather than healthy volunteers. That is often done in proposed treatments for cancer, where the new drug may be seen as a last resort. It is one thing to recommend something very risky to a person who seems likely to die soon if nothing is done (although the ethics of that is also debatable); it is quite another with an individual who is in good health.

It is also usual practice to try the drug on a single individual first, and not to give it to others until it seems safe to do so. That does not appear to have been the case in the TGN1412 trials, which is why all six volunteers suffered the violent reactions. Unfortunately, while the protocol did include a “time and events” table, this has been omitted from the version posted on the MHRA website [1].

In place of the table, there is a handwritten note referring the reader to an earlier statement (which is used to justify a number of other omissions as well): “Section withheld under section 43(2) of the FOI [Freedom of Information] Act as, in the MHRA’s view, disclosure would, or would be likely to, prejudice the commercial interests of TeGenero or associated third parties. In the Agency’s view the public interest in disclosure does not outweigh the private interest in withholding the information.”"

BBC has more accurate details:

Mr Wilson, who has left hospital, spoke of his anger at the companies involved, during an exclusive BBC interview.

He may lose all of his toes and parts of three fingers.

I'm not a weak person, and anyone who knows me knows that, so I'm not going to give up yet
Ryan Wilson

Mr Wilson is currently using a wheelchair, but will undergoing further surgery in about a month's time.

He said: "I can walk small bits now, but that is only heel-bearing and I have to wear these 'funky' shoes - they do the job, but they are horrid looking.

"Once I have surgery, it [walking] will depend on how long I take to do it - it could be a month, it just depends on determination."

Uncertain future

He adds that doctors are still unsure of the long-term damage that has been caused.

"There are a few parts of the immune system that are not right and they don't know if they will get back to normal, level off or decrease even more. It is hard to tell."

Mr Wilson entered the trial that took place at Northwick Park Hospital to pay for driving lessons.

He and five other volunteers were paid £2,000 to be given TGN1412, created by German pharmaceutical company TeGenero, by medical research company Parexel.

Ryan Wilson (BBC)
Mr Wilson will lose parts of some of his fingers

It was hoped that the drug would treat conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and leukaemia, but the trial went disastrously wrong.

Mr Wilson, the worst affected, suffered heart, liver and kidney failure, pneumonia, and septicaemia.

"I wouldn't want anyone else to go through this - even people that I'd call enemies. It's undignified," he told BBC medical correspondent Fergus Walsh

This tragedy came public because it has happened in London. People in poor countries that are in hospitals make part on clinical trials without knowing. They can have any reaction, die and nobody will ever knows.

This is to Traci Johnson and the other 4 volunteers who committed suicide while testing Cymbalta.
Traci, your parents, family and friends must not pay attention on your tragic suicide. But many people care. You were 19 years old and your whole life ahead you!
Look what they've done with these 6 volunteers in London.
I'm sure you're fine!

Women's sexual sactisfaction responsible for their mental condition!

Yesterday a discussion started on FS on the post "Risperdal And Abilify Lead To Hundreds Of Adverse Events Reports For Kids, Teens". Parallel to the discussion on the topic it was raised the abuse committed by some psychiatrists and female patients.

Back on 1987 I wrote to a newspaper on the Juan Carlos Kusnetzoff book "O Homem sexualmente feliz" - "The Sexually happy man" and it was a good reading. I remember he talked about meds that causes harm to sexuality. Of course antidepressants were on the list. He also wrote "The Woman sexually happy." None of them were translated into English and it seems that neither was "Andropausia" and "El Gran Dilema del sexo."
He is a good writer.

These are the comments from FS:

"Psychiatry is male dominated and also has a hugh rate of abuse between doctor and patient, usually male to female patient"
Truthman30
It's not unusual that women who replies "-No!" to the question "-Are you married?"
receives a sarcastic smile from the psychiatrist implying that all her problem is lack of sex.
It does not happens to men.
I've already received this "smile" once. I didn't had the attitude I have with physicians today.
If so he would have been asked:
"-What about YOUR sex life? Are you sure your orgasm is not just a mechanical response? Have you ever had a real good orgasm?"

.
This is Susan's reply:

Hey Ana, thank you! I wish I had a nickel for every time some assat pdoc has told me I wouldn't be this way if I could get laid, or was being laid regularly.
You are right, they would never ever say that to a man.
I'll tell you one worse. When I was 17 I had to get a gynecological exam before I could live on the college campus. Some strange rule they had for women. Anyway, I went to the one my mother used. He got me up in the stirrups, I was petrified and abashed. He poked around in there, and in front of my mother and the assisting nurse he says "Holy cow Mary, I got a virgin! I haven't seen one of those in years!".
I started crying. I was never so embarressed or mortified in my entire life. You wouldn't see a doc say that to a man, "Holy cow, I got one that is circumsized/uncircumsized, I haven't seen one of those in years".
I'm lucky now, I got a good female doc who cares. But sometimes I think they should teach med students to have a bit of hubris and care a bit more. Be less like House and more like Marcus Welby. But then I can say that about almost any profession.
I just wanted to say you aren't the only other one to have that experience.

Posted by susan at August 2, 2008 06:51 AM

It's not only psychiatrists that claims this nonsense and treat patients this way. It's usual that people with tell a woman "-she needs!" and it's said as a joke. People are not informed about sex. It seems as if males have no sexual problems.] and women only could have pleasure with men...Gee! I know many married women who has no sexual life whatsoever! They don't even have "lonely pleasure"! Aren't people reading these mags that talk openly about sexual life?

There are plenty talking about sex nowadays.

I'll end this post in the afternoon... too much to say.;..

I didn't write it today. There are many aspects of this issue and my mind went thinking on other issues. I know what I have to say but I'll wait till the right time.

Sarah Finkel rides again - statistics

SF "-But doctor! Wasn't my diagnosis bipolar disorder? Why do you want to change it now?"

Psychiatrist: "- You know this month we have already diagnosed - let me see: 4 top models, 2 talk show hosts; Mel Gibson came again... - well, there has been 12 people with this diagnose.
You were crowded out Mrs. Finkel. We would put in jeopardy the statistics. We need 2 OCDs. What do you prefer: take the OCD now or wait till next month for the bipolarity?

Cocaine and crack use raises

For 22years NEPAD* of Rio de Janeiro State University - UERJ has been working with illegal drugs addiction. According to the director Maria Thereza Aquino:
"In 1986 those who searched for NEPAD were young male adults of 24 and 25 years old who studied or worked. 80% used marijuana. Today we have groups of children in their 12 that already use alcohol, marijuana and cocaine".

To my dearest friend....

Hi my friend!
You know who you are. You've been coming to visit me almost everyday and I'm also very happy when I see you've been here. I would be very happy if you left a message.
Just to say "-Hello!".
I know you're not feeling fine and I care too much about you for I know people with the same problem like yours.
It would mean a lot to me if you just said "-Hi!"
Wish you all the best man!
Yours truly,
Ana

The fever is gone....

It was terrible! I don't use the word "hell" because this is what we use for withdrawal symptoms and I don't want to put in jeopardy our semantics.
After 4 nights waking up all wet it was so good to have a night of good sleeping and waking up dry looked like abnormal or a miracle.
How good it's to have our health back.
I thought I would remember the withdrawal nights when I use to wake up all sweat the same way as in fever.
Fortunately I've just remembered but i did not feel sad remembering it.
Here I'm!

ANON - from SocialAudit.org.uk

I've found three comments from the discussion board that is not available now.
There was a person whose nick was ANON who helped a lot. One of my messages to him:

Anon,
Thanks very much. You are always so kind and it helps too much to hear your words.
Today I slept a lot and the dizziness went away.
My body seems to be back to normal.
I'm feeling hot again, 30º explains that:))
Everybody was at the swimming pool the last two weeks and I was feeling a little bit cold.
Now I'm sweating because it is very, very hot. It's amazing, is it not? I'm so glad I'm sweating for a real reason. Hope this night I will sweat for it's hot.
But you cannot imagine how precious was to hear what you said. It was a relief
We always doubt our feelings, that is the message that I came here to tell.
When I was feeling the dizziness and all strange feelings I remembered all I had heard about it and always thought "lucky me I did not feel strange brain sensations and the zaps".
When it appeared I was "suspicious" it was withdrawal although I have read many reports about it.
I also want to tell you that I'm fine today only a little scared because it was a terrible sensation.
Yesterday I though I would be like that for the rest of my life or maybe I had a terrible disease.
It is silly to say this. But if you are experiencing any kind of this terrible withdrawal symptoms do not doubt and bear in mind that IT IS WITHDRAWAL.
The problem is that the sensations are so terrible and we have nobody to report them and hear: "Hold on. It is "normal". It is withdrawal and it will go away."
That's all we want to hear. This is the only help we need that moment.
But we do not have anybody to tell us that.
So we suffer the pain and the fear of not being sure about what is going on. And it has already been highly reported that when we tell our physicians they do not understand and comes up with lots of diagnoses and do not recognize WITHDRAWAL.
Unfortunately physicians, even the good and serious, are still unaware of a lot of what is going on.
It seems to me that the real good help comes from people who have suffered and kept on studying in order to heal themselves and help others.
I was feeling terrible and was emotionally terrible. I cannot go to any psychiatrist for I'm sure that I will hear that I'm depressed or that the despair comes from me. They still do not know about this kind of CHEMICAL DESPAIR. It does not come from the heart. First you start crying for no reason and after that you have reasons enough to be in real despair. The circle is something like this:
1) chemical despair appears (I've noticed that I start crying I frown and my forehead aches. It's different when I cry for a REAL reason. It starts in my heart I cry and tears comes naturally. I cry for some minutes, it stops and you have a break. In the chemical crying the tears are scarce and it seems endless and there is no connection to any trouble you have);
2) you get desperate because it is too, too painful and you cannot stop it;
3) it is impossible to stop the chemical despair using the same weapons we use to cope with bad emotions we have in our lives. There is no way to say to yourself "- Ok! Enough is enough. I have already suffered and now it is time to get a shower and move on. I will take a walk, do something..."
4) we often have to suffer this alone for people do not understand and will start telling us that "you must do this and that". So, another reason to despair: guilty.
What an ordeal!
I'm feeling not very "close to reality" lately. Can you imagine if I tell this to any physician and also that I cannot concentrate, feeling irritated and apathetic?
It's getting better and I feeling that this week things will be easier. But we never know. I believe that we all share the feeling: ME after SSRIs - ME during SSRIs - ME withdrawing SSRI - ME after SSRI.
What I want to tell you is that TRUST your FEELINGS. Keep on reading, searching, reading the reports that are all over the Web.
ANON, thanks again. What about you? Are you feeling better? You give so many advices but we also care about you. Have a Happy New Year, you deserve to have a wonderful year and recover from all the harm this drug has caused

SSRI Advices from SocialAudit Discussion Board

Dear Anonymous,

I don't quite know what to say.

The basic problem here, is that there is a very, very, dark side to these drugs. Of which, a large proportion of the medical profession still seems to be unaware. If you trace the history of these drugs, it reveals dodgy drug trials, and lots of ghost-written papers extolling their virtues... whilst minimising or hiding the nastier facts concerning side-effects, withdrawal effects, and after-effects. All to the detriment of the patient.

That is not to say they have no place within medicine: some people DO benefit from them, some sing their praises and state categorically that their lives have been saved by them. Never forget that you may be one of them.

But there is also the other side of the coin: those who are not helped, those who become much worse, those who become zombies, those who become aggressive, or actively suicidal, those who kill themselves/others. Those who start twitching, become unable to sleep, have ear and eye problems... those who do not have the required liver enzyme variants that allow the drugs to be metabolised... The dark pit the drug companies are so desperate to keep the lid on. And then there is the withdrawal...

A recent post states... 'We are aware that many GPs are currently prescribing SSRIs to patients with mild to moderate depression. This is breaking the new NICE guidelines on SSRI prescribing.' So the current situation seems to be that they should now only be prescribed, depression-wise, for those with severe depression.

You've also got to take everything I say, and balance it against the fact that these drugs have done me considerable damage. That's got to be a considerable bias, and on that basis alone you could quite reasonably discount all I've written.

I re-state: You might be one of those helped by these drugs.

Watch yourself carefully, and look out for warning signs like e.g. tremors, twitches, insomnia, staggering, tinnitus, over-sensitive eyes, chronic 'bone-deep' fatigue, becoming aggressive/suicidal, apathy, inability to motivate, thoughts cascading through your mind...

You should already have been told that you have about a 2/3rds chance of being affected by some form of sexual dysfunction (a major side-effect of these tablets). Your bodyweight may remain stable, drop, or increase (a very individual response - some people lose loads, others have put on stones).

But if you are seriously ill, and your life is on the line, then these are all risks to be balanced against this dreadful and immediate reality...

...all that matters, is whether it works for you. And no-one (at present, and give or take a liver enzyme test) knows that in advance. If you want have a good reference book at your side, detailing the possible side-effects, then get Joseph Glenmullen's 'Prozac Backlash'. Knowledge is the best protection.

Scared in MN -
Okay, advice and success stories we can help with. Get a nice hot cuppa, and put your feet up. Firstly, I've got to make it clear that I'm from the UK, and I'm guessing that MN is USA (?), if so, be aware that our national health systems are very, very different, and make allowances for this.

Right, where do we start...

1. Success stories - at one point I was on celexa, and tried to stop very much like you did. Result = total disaster. Yet I am now completely off them. Success stories are everywhere, and they proliferate once people realise what is actually going on when they tackle withdrawal i.e. they arm themselves with information about it (like you are currently doing), and then withdraw in accordance with what they have learnt, comforted with the knowledge and understanding that allows each potential withdrawal problem to be studied and recognised for what it is.

2. 'Scared to death and don't know what to do' - with regard to these drugs (you are on a SSRI, like prozac), ignorance is not bliss. Start learning & reading, the knowledge is going to knock a lot of the fear out of the window.

3. Your First Withdrawl Attempt - well, as you now realise, cold turkey can be a horrendous experience. It's not surprising you were forced straight back onto the drug. That's commonplace. Don't worry about it. Just let yourself stabilise for a bit, and get over the shock of what's happened.

4. Your doctor's response - well, she is correct in that some people may not be able to withdraw from the drug. It is being slowly acknowledged that some individuals will not be able to successfully withdraw, because of the physiological addiction: BUT that is a reasonable statement ONLY if you had been given thorough withdrawal advice, detailed withdrawal protocols, and constant support throughout the whole process! So I think you can safely throw that conclusion out of the window.

5. You want to get off the drugs - a difficult one, this one. Most people decide to come off the drugs because of a) adverse effects or b) feeling better or c) drugs doing nothing. The reason behind the decision to quit needs to be carefully considered. Faith is an extra level of strength, that will help you through withdrawal; but you do need to have a very clear idea of why you are coming off. This is one that only you, +/- a doctor, can sort out, with particular regard to the reason you were prescribed the drug to begin with...

6. A Doctor to help you through the process - can't help on that one. All I can suggest is to ask around. It seems that most doctors are still woefully uninformed about all aspects of these drugs, and are wading about often dispensing less than adequate, and occasionally dangerous, advice. If you find a well-informed doctor, you are on a winner.

7. Hints on how to get off :- Go straight to your local library or bookshop and get a copy of Joseph Glenmullen's 'The Antidepressant Solution - A step by step guide to safely overcoming anti-depressant withdrawal, dependence and addiction'. Or order it on the web (e.g. at www.amazon.com). It's a straightforward 'how to', telling you pretty much everything you need to know. It's just been published, and I wish I'd had a copy a few years ago. The basics are: a) tells you about the withdrawal symptoms, b) how to withdraw from the dose you are currently on, c) what signs to be aware of e.g. coming off too fast, or dropping your dose too quickly, d) draw up a workable timetable that'll get you through it. It's a good common-sense compilation. Read it - from the first page to the last, and don't start your withdrawal until you have done so... Always remember that your system is now attuned physiologically to the celexa, so you have to give it a nice... slow... taper... as you withdraw, giving your body gentle changes to which it can adapt, and mild/no withdrawal symptoms at each stage (better for you and your children); rather than a massive shock - and you already know the results of that. Some people move relatively swiftly and unproblematically through withdrawal, some have to taper their dose reductions more slowly, and a very small number have to reduce in tiny increments over long time periods. I can't say which group you will fall into, but the IMPORTANT thing is that even if you are extemely unlucky and need a very long taper, you are overwhelmingly likely to be able to successfully withdraw.

Other things - read the March 7th 2005 post, above, here's another success story. In the post below that, is a link to a highly reputable withdrawal protocol, print this off and study it -until the Glenmullen book arrives, since this, naturally, has much more detail - you should see all your withdrawal symptoms listed in the document, and it will reassure you as to what happened when you went 'cold turkey'. Go web surfing, for other independent withdrawal advice; and over at Yahoo is a 'Withdrawal and Recovery' Group for people in your very situation, if you feel like it, drop in and say hello. Search the other posts on this site using the facility at the bottom of the page... Celexa = cipramil = citalopram... lots of info floating about.

Best wishes.
