Psychiatric drug-induced suicide attempt: how to differentiate real suicide from drug-induced (repost)

"Drug-induced suicide ideation should be explained by those who are in charge of taking care of heath. However little is said about this fact that has been experienced by many people. I'm reposting it because some people can doubt that what they are feeling is really drug-induced.
There is a huge difference between wanting to die and just the act of killing oneself that is planted in the mind when we are dealing with drug-induced suicidal ideation. Trust your instincts and, please, search for help if you feel you are suicidal because of an antidepressant or any other drug.
This is my experience and I only published to make others understand that drug-induced suicidal ideation is REAL!I didn't write about the second because it is too hard.

"One of the strange feelings when someone or something do you harm is the mixture of feelings you have towards yourself. You feel as if it was your fault and you feel ashamed to tell others what has happened. Of course there is anger towards what did you harm but it's usual that people don't tell others about it.
We remain silent and hoping that someone else suffers the same and have the guts to tell others.
I said that I had suicidal ideation while tapering Effexor. What I didn't say is that I've tried to kill myself twice. I thought about it on a wide scale of degrees. Four times it was very hard to cope with it and for two times I've tried.
I'll tell you about one of these times.
I was in a normal day, tapering Effexor. All of a sudden, an idea was planted in my brain: "-I have to kill myself." Just like that. Unexpectedly, no reason for it, I was happy and then this idea appeared.
You don't think about anything else. You only think that you have to kill yourself. I wrote some notes for four people, and was thinking at the back of my mind: "-This is withdrawal, this is withdrawal, this is withdrawal…; call your therapist, call a friend, do something!"
Strangely enough you don't call anybody. You do not care. All you have to do is… kill yourself.
I have a dog. So I could not do anything at home for I could not harm her or make something that could kill her, like gas - my second attempt was with gas -, and you keep on wandering how are you going to do it without making any fuss and avoiding the scandal of being found dead in your place. Good, at least there's room to think about a dignified exit!
I had many samples of psychiatric drugs, drugs that I tried, and, at the forth pill had to stop… I had an arsenal of psychiatric drugs of many kinds.
Therefore, I took them all and put them in two bottles of Depakote - by that time it was sold in bottles not in blister. "-It's withdrawal, it's withdrawal, it's withdrawal… do something; call someone; call your therapist, please!" "-Nope! I have to kill myself."
I've phoned a hotel and ask for a bedroom. I've dressed myself with care and took a big bag pretending to be coming from a near town. I have put some clothes in this bag and a bottle of Jack Daniels to have the pills, Rohypnol was in the cocktail which is very helpful and was once used by the site Exit . They used to sell a packed for those who wanted to do euthanasia and I've discovered that one of the three items was Rohypnol. They are back now but with another proposal.
"-It's withdrawal, it's withdrawal, it's withdrawal… do something; call someone; call your therapist, please!" "-Nope! I have to kill myself."
It was 9 pm. I went away from my building, took a cab, and told the driver to go to the hotel. He left me there.
When I was in front of the hotel, I felt thirsty and did not want to appear as if I was out of my mind. I went to a place and asked for a bottle of water.
I thought that the man could not hear me. By miracle, he gave me the bottle of water. I took it and, miracle, I've paid for this and he smiled at me. He smiled at me!
So people could see me! "-It's withdrawal, it's withdrawal, it's withdrawal… do something; call someone; call your therapist, please…
Isn't it good!
I'm alive! I started walking. I've walked, walked, walked, and started to sweat.
Nice feeling! I was sweating and feeling all my body, my legs, my arms, my head, my hands, my toes…

What am I doing here? Why will I kill myself? I don't want to kill myself.
My dog is home! She must be feeling sad. I have to go back home to see her and call my friends and family."

"I want to thank Charles Medawar, SocialAudit. There was a man on his site whose nick was "Anon". He helped everybody and one of the things I've remembered was he saying that we should never become a statistics and if we killed ourselves "they" were winning another time.
He said other valuable things that was on my mind beside the "-It's withdrawal..."
Fortunately I don't remember anymore and I'm glad to be able to talk about it without crying and now I am feeling that it's in the past.
The only thing I fear is that even spending 19 months tapering Efexor when I reached the end of the process I felt so bad that I had to go back to the drug.
I'll talk about it later.
If I miss I pill I have nightmares. I fear missing the amount of dose and feel it again.
You can see that it's very easy to kill me if someone has the intention.
I also lost my freedom because I cannot make a trip or go anywhere without Effexor in my purse."

I forgot to post about some violent behavior I had at that time. I wrote about my experiences at the first year I was blogging.
I don't feel like writing about it any longer. But I will do it if it helps people.
But those who come to this blog already know. So, it is almost useless. I gave up trying to raise awareness.
I'm trying to catch attention of those who profit from all of this.

A new therapy is born: the doorway therapy

I did read this study by Professor Gabriel Radvansky about the hypothesis that when we pass through a doorway we have memory lapses.

"Recalling the decision or activity that was made in a different room is difficult because it has been compartmentalized."

I tend to see these hypotheses and their experiments as funny after studying treatments and therapies that don't work or are based on wrong theories, and I cannot help thinking that a new therapy is born: the patient that suffers from a trauma will pass through X number of doorways and will be healed.
The number of doorways will be stipulated after some experiments but we can already give a chart:

- trauma caused by divorce: 10 doorways a day for a period of three months;

- trauma caused by lost job: 5 doorways a day for a period of one month because if one is traumatized by job problems in a era where there are no jobs it makes no sense;

- trauma caused by child abuse: depends on the age of the person but usually 50 doorways a day for two years;

- trauma caused by being in the battlefield: same as for child abuse.

Tim Pawlenty, the governor that is in favor of forced ECT, will not run for presidency

It is a relief knowing that Tim Pawlenty ended his campaign for presidency of USA. On January, 2009 I received an e-mail, a call for action, to write to the Minnesota Governor to help stopping the forced electroshock Ray Sandford was receiving. I e-mailed him and many bloggers did the same.
After a long struggle Mindfreedom succeed and Ray Sandford is not ruining his mind and body anymore so that others make money, of course, without the help of Timmy.
The number of Americans that are already on drugs is appalling and it would be terrible if someone that has so little respect for the suffering of those who he represents were a candidate for presidency.
I wrote posts about Ray Sandford but Mindfreedom said it all:

Call for action: Sign petition to prevent US compulsory prescription of psychiatric drug to children

Founded in 2002 by former president Bush The New Freedom Commission on Mental Health was supposed to "...promote successful community integration for adults with a serious mental illness and children with a serious emotional disturbance." as it is at the commission's site.
But this is one of the health politics this commission propose:
The Ron Paul Parental Consent Act

"The New Freedom Commission on Mental Health has recommended that the federal and state governments work toward the implementation of a comprehensive system of mental-health screening for all Americans. The commission recommends that universal or mandatory mental-health screening first be implemented in public schools as a prelude to expanding it to the general public. However, neither the commission's report nor any related mental-health screening proposal requires parental consent before a child is subjected to mental-health screening. Federally-funded universal or mandatory mental-health screening in schools without parental consent could lead to labeling more children as "ADD" or "hyperactive" and thus force more children to take psychotropic drugs, such as Ritalin, against their parents' wishes.

Already, too many children are suffering from being prescribed psychotropic drugs for nothing more than children's typical rambunctious behavior. According to Medco Health Solutions, more than 2.2 million children are receiving more than one psychotropic drug at one time. In fact, according to Medico Trends, in 2003, total spending on psychiatric drugs for children exceeded spending on antibiotics or asthma medication.

Many children have suffered harmful side effects from using psychotropic drugs. Some of the possible side effects include mania, violence, dependence, and weight gain. Yet, parents are already being threatened with child abuse charges if they resist efforts to drug their children. Imagine how much easier it will be to drug children against their parents' wishes if a federally-funded mental-health screener makes the recommendation.

Universal or mandatory mental-health screening could also provide a justification for stigmatizing children from families that support traditional values. Even the authors of mental-health diagnosis manuals admit that mental-health diagnoses are subjective and based on social constructions. Therefore, it is all too easy for a psychiatrist to label a person's disagreement with the psychiatrist's political beliefs a mental disorder. For example, a federally-funded school violence prevention program lists "intolerance" as a mental problem that may lead to school violence. Because "intolerance" is often a code word for believing in traditional values, children who share their parents' values could be labeled as having mental problems and a risk of causing violence. If the mandatory mental-health screening program applies to adults, everyone who believes in traditional values could have his or her beliefs stigmatized as a sign of a mental disorder. Taxpayer dollars should not support programs that may label those who adhere to traditional values as having a "mental disorder."

This is from the petition congressman Ron Paul wrote explaining very well the absurd.

What The New Freedom Commission on Mental Health is proposing, and is already being done, is nonsense for many reasons and one of them is the impossibility of diagnosing mental disease by any physical or psychological test or by taking a quick look at a person.
Surely the US government will not spend loads of money to have groups of psychiatrists being at schools all over US for at least six months observing the behavior of each child. How will these screenings will be accurate?
What they really want is to put more children taking Ritalin and other psychiatric drugs whose harms are explained at the petition.
What they want is prescribing drugs to healthy children but they have to pretend that these children were diagnosed and as in psychiatry nothing is detectable easily, worse, any behavior can be considered abnormal, even excess of happiness or mild happiness, "Let's drug them. We want the money."
Sometimes I think that some of the mental health politics being done by USA government with the help of the corporate-elite that is ruling the world, and they affect the world, makes US eugenicists, that inspired Hitler, look like philanthropists. And if we go back in history in 1926 the Rockefeller Foundation has donated money for the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Psychiatry which was a great help in the construction of facilities to the "scientific experiments" done by Nazi scientists.
Funny that they started by killed those who were considered mentally ill.

Let's lobby! We don't need bribing

It is very easy for a lobbyist to stray into bribery -- the most direct way to influence legislation, obviously, is to bribe enough law makers to ensure that the bill you support passes. Therefore, lobbying is heavily regulated. Of course, a lobbyist rarely makes the news unless he or she has transgressed the regulations, and as a result, 'lobbyist' has rather negative connotations these days. Measures to control the influence of lobbyists include campaign finance reforms, often promised but rarely passed. "(emphasis mine)

Three US psychiatrists, responsible for trailblazing the use of antipsychotic drugs in children, are facing sanctions for their failure to declare their acceptance of millions of dollars from pharmaceutical companies between 2000 and 2007.

Joseph Biederman, Thomas Spencer and Timothy Wilens, child psychiatrists at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, were first identified three years ago in an investigation led by Iowa Republican Senator Charles Grassley as failing to disclose potential conflicts of interests that could have arisen due to payments from pharmaceutical companies.

Biederman had pioneered the diagnosis of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents, a disorder previously thought to affect only adults. One of the world’s most influential child psychiatrists, Biederman’s work led to a 40-fold increase in paediatric bipolar disorder diagnoses and an accompanying expansion in the use of antipsychotic drugs – developed to treat schizophrenia and not originally approved for use in children – to treat the condition.

However, Biederman and his colleagues Spencer and Wilens failed to accurately disclose the large consultancy fees they were receiving from pharmaceutical companies that make antipsychotics whilst conducting this research. At the time, Harvard and Mass. General rules forbade researchers from running trials of drugs that were made by companies paying them more than $10,000 a year, whilst National Institutes of Health regulations stipulated that grant recipients report any payments from pharmaceutical companies above this value to their universities.

Grassley revealed the trio’s misconduct in 2008, following his high-profile investigation of the psychiatrist Charles Nemeroff, and the three eventually admitted to receiving a combined total of $4.2 million from drug companies. The large number of psychiatrists investigated by Grassley’s probe poses the question of whether this field is more susceptible to competing interests or, as some suggest, suffers from higher scrutiny due to prejudices against psychiatry.

The Massachusetts General Hospital announced last Friday that it had completed its review of Biederman, Spencer and Wilens, and that “appropriate remedial actions” were being taken. In a letter to their colleagues, the three scientists explained that they were banned from participating in “industry-sponsored outside activities” for one year, to be followed by a two-year period of close monitoring and a delay in consideration for promotion.

The NIH relies upon research institutions themselves to monitor the interests of researchers and universities do this by requesting academics to voluntarily declare conflicts. The three Harvard scientists, who failed to report the full extent of their industrial payments, say that their collective misconduct was an honest mistake and that they had always believed that they were “complying in good faith with institutional policies”.

Last month, Pfizer announced its new collaborations with eight Boston research facilities. Cooperative efforts between academia and industry are on the rise as both face pressures to cut costs and it is hoped that by brokering more formal research agreements and paying money to institutions rather than individuals, conflicts of interests can be avoided.

Meanwhile, Grassley continues to push forward the Physician Payment Sunshine Act, which would require organisations to report all cumulative payments over $100,000 to physicians to the government. Each violation of the law would warrant a fine between 10,000 – 100,000 dollars - a punishment somewhat more severe than that faced by Biederman and his colleagues.

University of Montreal researchers say that the drug metyrapone reduces the brain’s ability to re-record the negative emotions associated with painful memories. In other words, bad memories are effectively blocked from being recalled or remembered.
The team’s study challenges the theory that memories cannot be modified once they are stored in the brain.
“Metyrapone is a drug that significantly decreases the levels of cortisol, a stress hormone that is involved in memory recall,” explained lead author Marie-France Marin, a doctoral student.
Manipulating cortisol close to the time of forming new memories can decrease the negative emotions that may be associated with them, the researchers said.
“The results show that when we decrease stress hormone levels at the time of recall of a negative event, we can impair the memory for this negative event with a long-lasting effect,” said Sonia Lupien, Ph.D., who directed the research.
Thirty-three men participated in the study, which involved learning a story composed of neutral and negative events.

While antidepressants have been used with some success in the adult population, there is wide concern about whether they should be used in children, let alone children of such a young age whose brains are going through critical periods of development.

Subliminally Dr Michael shows his approval for antidepressants's use in children or he would not leave the FDA data without a comment. Or it was edited this way. "There is "a concern" it can be, not be, it depends... so, take it just in case."

They will keep on prescribing to no matter who. We keep watching.

I've published at my blog Hella Heaven a post with the talking I had with a transgender woman, I call her Cynthia, that I've already mentioned here at this post when I first met her one year ago. She gave me her permission to publish our conversation so I'll publish it here but this time without other considerations as I did at the other blog.
I hope it is read by the most number of people as possible.

Ana: Yes. The mainstream media is doing a terrible job. They are under the laws of psychiatry that only cares about selling drugs.
Ana: They have ties with the pharmaceutical industry and they want to profit.

Ana: Yes. But they care about the money. This is one of the reasons they try to demoralize counseling.

Ana: They don't explain what depression really is and only gives medicines that... don't help.
Cynthia: im too familiar with meds that don’t help. I have samples! here!, "try this one", as if doctors get a commission off them
Ana: They do. They receive money to prescribe.

Ana: Yes. But they do....
Cynthia: should be the other way
Ana: It is amazing. And there is a whole system behind it all. politicians and even FDA and WHO is profiting.

Ana: Even killing people because one of the side effects is suicide or violent behavior. This is too sad. And I get sad and angry too many times.
Cynthia: i take 2 meds. Estradiol, and spiro
Ana: I don't know them.
Cynthia: spiro is an androgen blocker. estradiol is an estrogen replacement.

Cynthia: i can’t function without them, and they help. I’d have put a bullet in my head a long time ago without them.
Ana: I'm glad to know that something is working.
Cynthia: hormones are very hard to get especially for transpeople. They will diagnose you with everything under the sun before they call you trans.

Ana: You are lucky not to be taking Depakote and Lexapro. I'm very happy you are not taking them.
Cynthia: nothing worked so they decided i was bipolar, which was even more expensive. And then all kinds of pain meds. I’m immune to everything but dilaudid. And they got me hooked on opiates.
Ana: You must have suffered too much because of side effects and withdrawal. Opiates?
Cynthia: Vicodin.

Cynthia: among other wonder drugs for pain
Ana: You were sent to psychiatrists?
Cynthia: I’ve seen psychiatrists, neurologists, eurologists, endocrinologists.. and the list goes on. Hormone replacement worked wonders but i still cope with depression

Cynthia: Well, i feel like ending my life or i just don’t care what’s going on.Isolate, zone out, lose focus, get confused, irritated.
I don’t want to do anything, not even get out of bed.
sometimes i just feel totally numb. I haven’t been able to hold a traditional job, ever. Not for more than a few months. I get panic attacks, anxiety, tremors, migraines, sinus headaches, cluster headaches and have chronic pain in both legs.
So holding a job is out of the question. I try, but get fired, or quit
I’m not good with stress, unless I’m really passionate about what im doing
Ana: Passionate! Good you feel that way doing something. This can be part of your focus. Ror how long you took psych-drugs and when did you stop?
Cynthia: i took them off and on for most of my life. They started me on culvert when i was really little

Cynthia: ADD maybe. I don’t remember what it was for. Back then if you looked out the window during class they put you on Ritalin or cylert. I was hyperactive as a kid. then started going downhill about 8 after my first migraine. I had one every year about the same time- they started getting more frequent after a while. By the time i was 13, once a month. I could count out the days.. 20.. 24.. 27.. migraine! Almost like a period.
Cynthia: mom noticed i wasn’t developing like a boy.. or really at all so she took me to some quack. He decided i needed to have my testes surgically lowered and they found a little ovarian tissue. took that out, started me on testosterone.
Cynthia: migraines started lasting longer 3 days to 3 weeks.
By the time i was 18, my head was a screaming mess unless i was high. I started taking opium when i was 16. had been on pot for a while. First drug i ever tried was LSD. Seemed the pot and the opium were the only thing that would quiet the migraines. So I self medicated.
When i was 18, i stopped the T, and my migraines got less frequent. Imagine that.

Cynthia: I’ve been clean since my 21st birthday- about 12 years

Cynthia: they decided to make me a boy by injection.
Ana: This is criminal.
Cynthia: at 20, my hormone levels dropped to near nothing, migraines and cluster headaches were worse than ever and more frequent- I'd feel hot when it was freezing outside and vice versa. my body does NOT generate its own hormones. but testosterone was the wrong choice.
Ana: They made a guess it seems to me.
Cynthia: they guessed i was a boy.
Ana: Yes.
Cynthia: they guessed wrong. Should have asked me maybe?
Ana: Exactly.
Cynthia: one doc did.
But i was terrified of the consequence if i told the truth. I said- of course i want to be a normal boy. I regret that one like hell. I was a kid, i wanted to be normal.

Ana: This is a hard definition.
Cynthia: you know the mathematical norm of all societal variances
Ana: Yes.
Cynthia: a pregnant hermaphrodite living on less than a dollar a day,

Cynthia: So far I’ve no job, no insurance; don’t qualify for unemployment or welfare. Can’t prove a permanent address so food stamps are out of the question
Ana: Many people are in the same boat.
Cynthia: I get by. Dad says im lazy. Living at home I feel more like a leech than living with friends
Ana: Family members don't understand. And physicians don't explain to them either.
Cynthia: or really to the patient even
Ana: There is no campaign to explain what depression really is,.
Cynthia: I'im going to medicate you for... *rolls dice* insomnia
Ana: That's the way they do. "rolls dice" is the right description.
Cynthia: i don’t trust them
Ana: Me and many others too.
Cynthia: all they’ve done for me is put a hole in my pocket. drawing on credit debt for medications and living expenses... I’m in a hole i can’t dig out of. I need hormones so my body knows to cool down when its warm, and warm up when its cold, regulate my moods. Beyond that- i don’t want to try the next new misdiagnosis.
Ana: I don't think you need any other diagnosis.
Cynthia: I know what’s going on to some extent, most of the time. My memory short term and a little of my long term. because a woman’s brain can’t take the damage Testosterone does to it over a 5 year period.
Ana: I'm sure that some of your symptoms are due to medications
Cynthia: i started failing math tests only when i could no longer reinvent the formulas on the fly. I’m a very smart person
Ana: I can see that.
Ana: Few people know what was done to them. You know very well.
Cynthia: my test scores were thru the roof. My brain tells me that when i was little, it told y ovaries to kick in, but didn’t find any- so it just shut that pituitary gland right down. doc stepped in and forced it back on. That’s the source of my problems. I could be 5 foot 6 instead of 6 foot four, a whole lot prettier and much less hairy.
Ana: In the name of "normality" they did the wrong treatment to you. They don't allow people to be what they are. They don't research. It costs... money.
Cynthia: i could have been a very successful marine biologist

And get very sad when hear medicine doing wrong to people.

Ana: I thought that it was only once in a million years that transgender appeared.

Ana: Just like they tell us in History Channel.

Ana: And they have to intervene.
Cynthia: there is a society in Indonesia that respects 5 genders

Cynthia: funny, about unequal number of each there. The reason the numbers are so low in the 'civilized' world? People feel they have to hide it. Most become unexplained suicides.

Cynthia: of those that transition, less than one percent survive, due to suicide brought on by social and economic pressures, or are brutally murdered. Sorry, that is to age 60. We have a great chance of survival, doing this, being who we are takes balls of steel.
Ana: I can imagine.
Cynthia: I don’t deal with a lot of the discrimination issues for 2 reasons: if they see me as a man, they see me as a very large man (6'4") and don’t want to fuck with me or I pass well enough that no one sees a man.
When it comes to getting a job, whole other story:
"we so want to hire you!" i just need a copy of your driver’s license and SS card. 10 minutes later they are informed the position was filled already and are deeply sorry for the inconvenience.
And i can hear the stifled giggling after the door closes behind me

Cynthia: how i feel most of the time. angry. Cheated.

Cynthia: this is America. Equal protection under the law extends to race, physical sex, and sexual orientation only. Gender identity, not so much

Ana: I think that the main issue are governments that indoctrinate people to hate this and that. People don't think by themselves. They judge according to what common judgment tells them.

Ana: Me too. Church has nothing to do with spirituality. They care about other things.

Psychoanalysis is alive and ready to recover it's place

For a long time I asked myself what happened to psychoanalysis in America. I asked many people what kind of therapy they were doing and most people said they were seeing a psychologist, a therapist and when I asked if it was a psychoanalyst people usually didn't understand what I was talking about.
In the big cities of Brazil psychoanalysis is still practiced and what changed is that they it's not the first option when someone has a emotional problem like it was in the seventies and part of the eighties.
Today psychiatrists are the doctors to go no matter if the problem is sadness because of a divorce or someone in a maniac phase.
They say to the patient if he/she must search a psychoanalyst or not. It was the opposite before psychiatry took over since the eighties.
I came across with this article and felt like sharing because I was fortunate to find a good psychoanalyst that was possible to work with, I believe that it is a partnership and you work with your therapist and I heard people saying that they hated psychology because they had an answer for their lives which is not the way I think any good therapy is done.
I would like to remember that before doing therapy I thought it was nonsense and talking to a friend is the same.
No, it is not the same and it is hard to explain what happens in this process, while you're there talking and things turn into something different.

Gary Shteyngart has written three best-selling novels and been hailed by critics as one of today's most gifted young authors. But ask Shteyngart about his life a decade ago and he sums it up in two words: "major dysfunction."
Shteyngart was just 7 when his parents transplanted themselves from Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) to New York City. Theirs was the ever-better immigrant experience. Gary's was not. Quiet, frail, frequently bedridden with asthma, Shteyngart was sent to a Hebrew school where he was incessantly teased about his wardrobe (he had two shirts), his heavy accent, and his preference for Russian food. He had few friends, frequently worried about dying, and felt neither Russian nor AmericanThe isolation and alienation followed him to college in the midwest and back to New York, where he worked for tiny nonprofit organizations. Although Shteyngart was spending hours a day writing, he had a paralyzing fear of sharing his work with publishers. (His wildly comic first novel, The Russian Debutante's Handbook, was published only after he sent a portion of the manuscript to a fellow immigrant, who ran an MFA program in writing in New York; Shteyngart thought he was applying to the program, but his bowled-over friend sent the manuscript to his own publisher.) A series of "disastrous relationships" with women only fed his feelings of being a "second-class citizen."

And so Shteyngart, still in his 20s, embarked on a course of psychoanalysis. Although he was often depressed, there were no specific symptoms he sought to address. "I felt that my entire personality needed to be entirely re-examined and, when necessary, changed," Shteyngart says. "Other forms of therapy do not explore and rewire the personality to the same extent."

What attracted Shteyngart to psychoanalysis is precisely what has for more than a century made it fodder for impassioned, and often ugly, debate.

It is time-intensive and prohibitively expensive. Its benefits are not easy to measure, particularly compared with those promised by more popular, contemporary methods of treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy(CBT). As a result, psychoanalysis has been dropped from the curriculum of many medical schools and is rarely covered by insurance plans. When it is taught and practiced, experts say, modern psychoanalysis, also called psychodynamic psychotherapy, often bears little resemblance to the treatment put forward by its founding father, Sigmund Freud.

But psychoanalysis is a profound exploration of human subjectivity—our inner world with all its memories and desires and impulses—and its relation to the external, objective world. And it is much more than a treatment. It's also a set of theories about the nature of human experience, its depth and complexity. "Analysis is the most elaborate and nuanced view of the mind that we have," Nobel-winning neuroscientist Eric Kandel recently told a meeting of the American Psychoana-lytic Association.

At its center is the belief that subjectivity matters, that regardless of how many millions of circuits science shows are carrying out the work of thebrain without our awareness, we still experience a unified sense of self that gives our lives coherence and meaning. In this regard, experts argue, psychoanalysis, which celebrates its hundredth anniversary in America this year, is very much alive.

"Psychoanalysis reflects decades and decades of thinking about and pondering on the nature of the human mind," says Peter Fonagy, Freud chair in psychiatry at University College London and director of the London-based Anna Freud Center. "We've identified the core constructs within psychoanalysis as a theory"—the nature of consciousness, the role of early childhood in shaping understanding and behavior, the effect ofunconscious processes on everyday life, to name a few—"and shown that they continue to advance our understanding of the human mind. In this sense, I think psychoanalysis is in the best shape it's ever been in."

Fonagy and other long-time psychoanalysts credit the staying power of psychoanalysis in part to a culture shift among their colleagues.

For most of the 20th century, psychoanalysis became a guru science, driven by cults of personality around Freud and other dominant figures rather than by scientific investigation.

Many analysts were spinning out theories about the mind without gathering evidence to support them—say, the idea that all our thoughts and actions are driven by only two basic motives, sex and aggression—and doing little to disseminate them outside their own exclusive circles. One result was the creation of factions and intense infighting within them over details that had no currency in the wider world of psychiatry.

"There were prejudices built into psychoanalysis that really hurt it," says Mark Solms, head of neuropsychology at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and a practicing psychoanalyst. "Many psychoanalysts felt they didn't want to reduce what they did to numbers, that their work was about the soul. So when other sciences were advancing with research, psychoanalysis didn't. They essentially shut their eyes and said 'we don't do that.' And that only reinforced the caricature" of a field that was old-fashioned, spoke largely to itself, and was obsessed with sex.

I didn't know it was possible and how to visit a blog via cache so I'm amazed that there has been visits. One of them from Florida lasted more than 3 hours.
As I saw many testimonies of people that didn't recover their blog I believe this is the last post about this issue and the last post of justAna too.
You have no idea how fragile we feel losing our work and a work that nobod asked you to do and nobody cares if you do it or not.
And people address to you, knowing that your Google account has been disabled, as if maybe you are not trustworthy and since Google has the politics of not letting people know what they did wrong we can imagine everything.
Thank you all the nice people I met with this and the other blog.

Consequences of disabled account and being impossible to login to Hella Heaven

It's been already 14 hours I wait for an answer for the reason why my Google account was disabled - the first picture shows the page I'm sent when I try to login to my blog Hella Heaven.
The second picture is at the directory Bloggers. They don't have me as a member anymore and ask me to put the badges back or to reverify ownership of my blog Hella Heaven or they will delete my account.
I didn't visit the others directories cause I'm too tired.
What I think is that it is unfair being accused of something I don't know and being asked to read all the pages of terms of service and others to see if I find what I did wrong.
This is just like asking the criminal to study laws so that he/she knows what was the crime. After the degree, MA, PhD and maybe a academical life being a teacher and researcher: "I still don't know what I did wrong."
I don't think this blog is a self-help lost accounts but if you are experiencing the same problem you're welcome to weep here too. If you experience it in the future, I really hope not because you have no idea what is the feeling when you watch the the page that is at the first picture - click at it to have an idea - remember this post.
I don't know why these things happen to me.
This account, of justAna, has been hijacked in 2010 and I could not access this blogger too. My e-mails were all deleted and till today I have a problem with my Inbox that I don't know how to fix. It was returned.
It seems that this time I did something wrong. On Friday they did the same: disabled the account, Hella Heaven's account, and gave me back and today, five days later they disabled again and don't give me back.
I have a huge headache.

As I wrote at the post below I cannot access Google account and my blog Hella Heaven was removed.
The posts are being destroyed little by little. Now the images are disappearing and I believe that soon the texts will also go away.
I'm no longer at Bloggers, the directory where I was among the top 10, but I'm still in two other directories I just searched.
I don't want to look for more.
It is a very strange feeling. As if you lost the key to your house and is at the corridor or downstairs discussing to the doorman what to do: "Do you own the key?" he asks. "No." I reply. "So you'll have to wait for the owners."
"Yes." I answer in such a low voice that he doesn't listen.
Who cares?

Google accuse me of violating terms of service but they don't say what did I do.

I'm trying to regain my Google account and my Blog for more than 6 hours. This is unacceptable. Google has to do something to prevent bloggers losing their blogs when Google account has a problem.
And we are accused of having violated Terms of Services! This is so unfair!
I'm tired.
I deactivated comments at this post and this blog for the moment.
I'm sorry but losing Hella Heaven affects this blog too because they are complementary.
I'm tired and I don't understand what have I done that can be considered a violation of Google's terms of service.

I don't think people have the exact dimension of how much work bloggers do. It seems that only those who blog about their work loses something and those who write about their photographies, a picture... no, it is not that important anymore because of digital cameras: the artistic value of photographies lost a little.

It seems that writing, if it is not poetry, No... poetry is easy, you just have to rhyme... a novel,... also easy just tell the story of your neighbor.

Coroner calls for urgent anti-depressant inquiry after doctor blames drug for mother's suicide

A mother-of-two hanged herself while her children watched TV downstairs after anti-depressants turned her into a zombie, an inquest heard

A coroner has ordered an urgent investigation into an anti-depressant after it turned a mother-of-two into a 'zombie' before she was found hanged in her attic.

Housewife Yvonne Woodley, 42, visited six GPs who increased her dosage of Citalopram in the months before her death.

But she became more agitated after taking the drug and told people she wanted to die.

Her husband Kevin found her hanging in the loft of the family home in Solihull, West Midlands, on October 25 last year.

Their two daughters, aged ten and 14, were watching TV downstairs at the time.

Birmingham coroner Aiden Cotter called for more research into the drug after experts raised concerns over its side-effects.

The inquest in Birmingham on Monday heard how Yvonne saw six GPs on nine occasions at Solihull's Yew Tree Medical Centre last year.

Doctors increased the dosage of the drug but her mental state continued to deteriorate.

Professor David Healy, an anti-depressants expert at Cardiff University, told the inquest he believed the drug was to blame.

He said: 'I believe the drug was likely to have played a part.

'Yvonne was clearly suffering adverse effects of the drug and it was this that put her at risk.

'If treatment was contributing then putting the dosage up wasn't the thing to do.
This is the second inquest regarding this drug I have attended in the past five months. There have also been homicide cases involving it.'

Yvonne's mother Vera Sansbury told the hearing she saw her daughter turn into a 'zombie' after taking the drug.

She said: 'The change in my daughter was remarkable.

'She was a stable, happy, calm person but in three weeks the decline was rapid to a woman who was trembling, had panic attacks and wouldn't make eye contact.

'She was like a zombie. The eyes were blank and flat and there was no emotional response. Yvonne displayed every single side-effect of the drug.'

The inquest heard that the drug was a common anti-depressant which came with a warning about side-effects.

The effects include agitation and mental turmoil in the first weeks of treatment and trials showed it could increase the risk of suicide.

Recording an open verdict, coroner Aidan Cotter said: 'I cannot be sure of what happened and Mrs Woodley's death may have been an accident as she made a cry for help.

'I will write to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency asking if more research is needed into the drug.'

Dr Christopher Muldoon, representing Lundbeck which manufactures the drug, said: 'The drug is safely used by millions of people but it could cause someone to take their life who had not previously thought of doing so.

'I don't think this was the case with Mrs Woodley as I think it was her underlying depressive illness.'

Good News: Last post of Survivors can Strive and a beautiful story

Marj at Survivors can Strive did her last post. After six years of blog she feel it's time to start another era:

"I thought about a few different things I would write for this post. Then, I had a little get together with a group of my friends that we sometimes call the "going deeper" group. It's a group of people that tend to have very little tolerance for idle chit chat and bullshit. We like to talk about "deep things." During our last get together, we drank wine and read each other our own obituaries that we had written for ourselves. Here is what mine said:

"The major accomplishment in the life of Marj McCabe was breaking the cycle of abuse. It was a cycle of child abuse--sometimes insidious, always heinous--that she was forced to inherit and had gone on for generations on both sides of her family of origin. Although this accomplishment took the excruciating work of therapy for much of her adult life, she never could have done it without the patience and love of her amazingly supportive husband. She never would have embarked on the perilous journey in the first place, had it not been for the immense love she felt for her own offspring. And while it never received the fanfare or recognition of other achievements having such great potential for positive impact on future generations, Marj could grasp its significance. And for her, it was enough."

Since writing that "obituary," I've thought a lot about just what is enough for me. One of the main reasons I started writing a blog is to find meaning for the abuse I suffered as a child. I'm not sure I've done that, but I have done a lot." whole post here.

I'm happy for her and thou I'll miss her that is the way it is. She helped many people and I'm sure her blog will help others who were abused during childhood.

Vanda Pharmaceutical wants all the money from Fanapt

Rockville-based biopharmaceutical company Vanda Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: VNDA) has announced that Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp., an affiliate of Vanda's sub-licensor Novartis Pharma AG, has initiated a clinical study to evaluate the long-acting injectable formulation of Fanapt (iloperidone).

The Phase 1 study will evaluate the safety and pharmacokinetic profiles of two different long-acting formulations in patients with schizophrenia. Vanda Pharmaceuticals is focused on the development and commercialization of clinical-stage products for central nervous system disorders.

Vanda Pharmaceuticals said that under a 2009 agreement, Novartis has exclusive rights to the depot formulation of Fanapt in the U.S. and Canada. Vanda has exclusive rights to the depot formulation outside the U.S. and Canada, but Switzerland-based Novartis has the option to enter into discussions with Vanda to co-commercialize Fanapt or receive sales royalties for such territory. Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe and disabling mental disorder, characterized by profound disruptions in thinking, affecting language, perception and the sense of self. It often includes psychotic experiences, such as hearing voices or delusions. Schizophrenia typically begins in late adolescence or early adulthood and affects 2.4 million Americans, or 1.1 percent of the U.S. adult population.

Brain Development Switch Could Affect Schizophrenia, Other Conditions

ScienceDaily (Apr. 7, 2011) — An international team of scientists lead by researchers from Duke University and Johns Hopkins University have discovered a key "switch" in the brain that allows neurons to stop dividing so that these cells can migrate toward their final destinations in the brain.

The finding may be relevant to making early identification of people who go on to develop schizophrenia and other brain disorders.

"This work sheds light on what has been a big black box in neuroscience," said Nicholas Katsanis, Ph.D., co-senior author of the work and Jean and George Brumley Jr., MD, Professor of Developmental Biology, Professor of Pediatrics and Cell Biology. "It helps answer the question of what happens when neurons stop dividing and start moving along to populate the brain."

The study was published by Naturejournal on April 6 in its advance online publication.

Katsanis predicts that, for perhaps 10 percent of psychiatric illness, the illness is primarily driven by defects in this switch system. "So we now have ways to interpret variation in humans, in a context that is relevant to their particular cases, to their physiology -- that is where medicine will move next," Katsanis said.

Katsanis, who directs the Duke Center for Human Disease Modeling, and Akira Sawa, M.D., Ph.D., a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins, were introduced to each other by a clinical colleague who thought that Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) proteins that are involved in transport duties within cells might have a role in schizophrenia. Katsanis is an expert in using BBS genetic mutations and proteins to learn more about other diseases. BBS is a complex genetic disease with autism-like symptoms, cognitive defects and depression. Sawa is an expert on DISC1, the protein named Disrupted in Schizophrenia 1, known to be a major susceptibility factor for schizophrenia and related disorders. (emphasis mine)

Together, they discovered that these proteins are involved in a key switch for neurons that is necessary for brain development. When DISC1 gains a phosphate group at a specific site, it recruits BBS1. When BBS1 is missing in this system, the team could observe defective neuron migration, while a model with no DISC1 at all leads to defects in both cell proliferation and migration. We can now appreciate that some fraction of schizophrenia is truly developmentally regulated, Katsanis said.

"Even though the disease manifests itself after pubescence, scientists have suspected that the underpinnings are prenatal," he said. "We can greet this news with sadness or see it as an opportunity: we may have 20 years to help before a person starts experiencing symptoms, if we can develop techniques to use early enough." The study also provides another example of how BBS proteins fit into neuroscience and provide another instance in which understanding of a rare phenotype (BBS) informs complex traits, like schizophrenia, profoundly, Katsanis said. "The trend in recent years has been to focus heavily on common disorders and to disregard disorders that might impact fewer people. Yet rare disorders continue to provide such important insights both into basic biological processes and complex disease." (Emphasis mine, pressing panic bottom)

"With these findings, we have tools for interpretation in some schizophrenia cases," Katsanis said. About one in 100 children born go on to develop schizophrenia in early adulthood.

Now the scientists are engaged in medical re-sequencing of patients with psychiatric illness with a specific focus on the groups of proteins involved in the switch process. "We will be able to ask focused questions about the amount of variation that this particular system contributes to the complex landscape of genetic disease," Katsanis said.

Other authors include Edwin C. Oh and John F Robinson of the Center for Human Disease Modeling and Departments of Cell Biology and Pediatrics at Duke; and researchers from the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore; the Departments of Physiology and Anatomy at Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo; and the Molecular Pharmacology Group, Institute of Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of Glasgow.

Brazilian school-shooter had mother who tried suicide and was schizophrenic

At this video is the brother of Wellington de Meneses Oliveira. It is edited and I'm sure that this interview could help understanding more about the killer, the monster, as he is being called, who shot the children but it was released only 1,29 minutes with the voice of the reporter narrating.
It is not at this part of the video that it is said his biological mother was schizophrenic. It was Rodrigo Neves, secretary of welfare state and humans right who claimed so.
The brother says that Wellington was always very low profile and didn't socialize too much; that the biological mother had mental problems and tried to commit suicide; he searched the internet about gun shots; that Wellington surprised the family with thoughts saying that he felt like doing something like destroying an airplane like it was done in USA; he went to psychologists but quited.
What is being said at Globo network is not everything and they keep repeating or adding new material to make people have only one opinion about the case.
I will stop following it and will no longer update because I don't have unbiased data.
I wish that humans right organizations were following the case but there is not such a thing in Brazil nowadays. Not for this case.
The discussion is being centered in the access to weapons. In Brazil the constitution don't give Brazilians the right for guns.
They only want to disarm people and are claiming that it is the main reason why the crime was possible.

Fellow students gave him the nasty nickname "Swing," because he walked with a limp, said former classmate Bruno Linhares, who lamented to O Globo newspaper that "the class fool turned into a criminal."
"They called him all kinds of names," said Linhares, 23, who studied with Menezes at Rio's Tasso da Silveira school where the bloodbath took place.
"I honestly do not know why he did not do that (massacre) with our own group," Linhares told local media.
Experts took to Brazil's airwaves, seeking to explain just how he could have turned to evil, with some saying Menezes could have been reacting to the abuse at school." .........

........."Menezes de Oliveira's family said their adopted son had left home eight months earlier, when his mother died and became even more withdrawn.
Adopted as a baby, he had five brothers and sisters who said he never had friends.
Recently he was looking disheveled, dressing in black and looking at weapons sites on the Web, his older sister Roselaine said.
"We found it odd. He had a long beard (and) said strange things. He spent his time on the Internet, had no friends, was very withdrawn," Roselaine, who last saw her brother seven months ago, told TV Band News.
According to one neighbors, Menezes "walked with his head down without speaking to anyone."
Menezes worked as a messenger, but was sacked last August.

It is funny watching psychiatrists explaining the delusion. You can see how they don't understand and how some of them condemn their own perception of what they believe that was in the mind of someone they never saw. But they behave like this even with their own patients!

School Shooting in Brazil: I'm overwhelmed

Maybe you don't know what happened yesterday in Rio de Janeiro. Facts:

"Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Reuters) - Rio de Janeiro's Civil Police released on Thursday (April 7) a security camera video showing the moment a gunman walked into a school and opened fire on children in two classrooms.
Twenty-four-year-old Wellington de Oliveira killed 12 children and then shot himself at a public school in Rio's poor outskirts, shocking the South American nation that has never seen such an incident before.
The hallway video shows Oliveira carrying a gun and several children running desperately out of two classrooms as he shot indiscriminately at them.
Police said Oliveira entered the school carrying two guns and a suicide note. Oliveira told security he was there to deliver a speech and then opened fire on students.
He was a former student at the school. Police said they believed he was mentally unstable, citing the content of the suicide note, which asked that "(someone) stand in front of my tomb and ask God to forgive me for what I did."
Oliveira did not have a police record."

This is the translation that Globo Network did of part of the note Wellington Meneses de Oliveira carried with him. The entire letter has not yet been published even in Brazil:

"You should first know that the impure cannot touch me without gloves, only the chaste or those who lost their chastity after marriage and were not involved in adultery can touch me without gloves, or, in other words, no fornicator or adulterer can have direct contact with me, nor anything that is impure can touch my blood, nothing impure can have direct contact with a virgin without his permission, those who prepare my burial should take off all my clothes, wash me, dry me and wrap me totally naked in a white sheet that is in this building, in a bag that I left in the first room on the first floor, after they have wrapped me in this sheet they can put me in my coffin. If possible, I want to be buried next to the grave where my mom sleeps. My mom's name is Dicea Menezes de Oliveira and she is buried in the Murundu cemetery. I need to be visited at my grave by a faithful follower of God at least once, he must pray in front of my grave and ask God's forgiveness for what I did praying that upon his return Jesus wakes me from the sleep of death for eternal life.

I left a house in Sepetiba which no family needs, there are poor institutions, financed by generous people, that take care of abandoned animals, I want this space where I passed my final months donated to one of these institutions, because the animals are being very despised and need much more protection and care than human beings who have the advantage of being able to communicate, to work to feed themselves, so those who take ownership of my house, I ask you to please have some common sense and abide by my request, automatically they will be fulfilling the wishes of my parents who wanted to pass this property to my name and everybody knows this, comply with my request otherwise they automatically will be disrespecting my parents' wishes, which would prove that all of you have no consideration for our parents who now sleep, I believe that all of you have some consideration for our parents, proving this by doing what I asked."

I just saw the videos at Youtube and I will not publish now because I would like to choose one that has less journalistic intervention. They did a "photography" of Wellington from a video and he looks scary but it is the way they want him to look. People are calling him crazy and yesterday a psychiatrist said that he is sure that Wellington is paranoid-schizophrenic. Another psychiatrist came up with the same diagnostic at night but in a nicer way, at least saying that the vast majority of schizophrenics don't do it and are victims of crimes. But it was a very quick interview.
So we have schizophrenia, school-shooting, suicide... what a great combination for the media and politicians to manipulate it the way they want.
People are infuriated and claiming that this "animal", this "lunatic", this "psychopath", this "beast" don't deserve any mercy.
I had a terrible day yesterday and publish something at my other blog. Didn't sleep well and I keep thinking about these children. Wellington is a former student of the school. It is all very confusing. I wonder why these kind of things only happen in the poor part of the town. I have many questions but for the moment I need to quiet my mind. I have to be silent. It's hard. But this is the right thing to do. I felt like publishing it here because this is the blog I share my feelings and my.... I don't know... my children... the sound of the voice of a woman shouting "My son!" will haunt me for some hours. But Wellington too. I believe some of you can understand him a little.

"Ian Smith hit out at the pressures placed on youngsters by today’s society after being told of the death of Harry Hucknall, who was given fluoxetine and Ritalin for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.
He said: ‘I do believe it reflects upon society how we expect children to behave. We expect them to be little adults. ‘We as a society quite rightly try to stop children dabbling in street drugs. And yet a child with this label of ADHD is prescribed, under supervision, mind-altering drugs of a very powerful nature.’ Harry, a twice-removed cousin of the Simply Red singer, was described as a ‘troubled boy’. He was unsettled by moving home 14 times and bullied at school – on one occasion he was held down and threatened with a screwdriver.
In September, he was found dead in his locked bedroom in the home he shared with his mother in Dalton-in-Furness, Cumbria. The levels of both drugs found in his system were above the normal therapeutic level for adults. West Cumbria coroner Mr Smith said, although Harry talked of suicide, he did not intend to end his own life. Instead, he told the inquest in Barrow, he ‘died as a consequence of his own actions without understanding their true consequences’. Harry’s father, Darren, who is separated from his mother, said the drugs were ‘a major contribution to what happened’. ‘He never mentioned he wanted to kill himself before the tablets,’ he claimed."

This post is for those who are taking psych-drugs that are known to provoke drug-induce suicide ideation and it shows how powerful the chemical wanting to die is. If you are a family member you have to rely on your observations but, please, don't let the death of your son be another story, another number.,

I'm very disappointed because I just found it out and thought it was a new organization that would have an impact in the ethics and integrity of scientific research. Help Bring Scientific Integrity Standards to Food SafetyUnsafe food can lead to illness and death, and disproportionately harms the most vulnerable members of our communities. Government agencies, like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) are supposed to protect us from these kinds of dangerous food safety outbreaks.

Unfortunately, in a recent survey conducted by the Union of Concerned Scientists and Iowa State University, hundreds of FDA and USDA employees described a system where corporate interests often stand in the way of government scientists and inspectors’ ability to protect our food supply.
This kind of political and corporate inference in federal science has to stop.
This fall, UCS activists helped convince the Department of the Interior (DOI) to issue a new policy that, if fully implemented, would help prevent just this kind of interference in federal government science. But DOI scientists aren’t the only ones who should be protected. It’s time for other agencies plagued by misuse of science to follow suit.
Write the FDA and USDA today and ask them to get serious about protecting our health and safety by issuing and implementing strong scientific integrity standards.

Andrew Witty, CEO, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) speech to WHO about neglected diseases: words, not action

On March, 2009 I wrote this post about Doctors Without Borders' demanding action to Mr. Andrew Witty, GlaxoSmithKline CEO, in promoting research for neglected disease.
If you are patient enough to watch the video, done in October 2010, can you please tell me if you have the same impressions?
He talks, talks and talks as if he was bored. Although the words comes from his mouth I don't see any passion about the subject or enthusiasm about promoting health.
But nothing compares with what Margaret Chan Director General, WHO, said: she thanks Andrew Witty for his... generosity. GENEROSITY? Researching to find treatment to diseases is a generous act? Neglected diseases? Why neglected? No money no cure?
It is clear that health is not in the minds of these people.

"We need to get behind our sister psychiatric survivor, Alison Hymes of Charlottesville, VA. I just got off the the phone with Alison, and she authorized me to share her information to get support and assistance.

Alison is currently at Martha Jefferson Hospital. She had the independent psychiatric evaluation today, and they are definitely sending her to Western State Hospital. They didn’t have the commitment hearing yet…that’s Monday. But she says it’s just a formality. This is WSH, where they wish to send her for 6 monthsAlison had a kidney transplant in October 2008 for loss of kidney function due to psychiatric malpractice many years ago. She was sucked back into the psych system at UVA by commitment in 2009 when she had a reaction to the steroids prescribed for the kidney transplant. It was also due to neglect by her psychiatrist that the issues were not addressed. Instead of addressing it as a steroid reaction, they decided it was a “bipolar episode” and gave her drugs that nearly caused the loss of her transplanted kidney and bladder. She was totally re-traumatized.

She has been highly anxious ever since, and her outpatient doctor raised the klonopin to a high dose since that time, but she also lost her therapist of 9 years over the summer and had little or no family/friend support. Before she took this recent downturn, she was highly anxious, but still driving, shopping, cooking and taking care of herself, including daily walks. When her psychiatrist saw her mid-January, Alison reported anxiety and sleeplessness and was prescribed a low dose of Seroquel, and within 2 days, the round of ER visits, crisis center stays and threats of commitment began. She was suddenly unable to drive, cook, bathe properly or take care of herself, and it was directly caused by the addition of Seroquel. The response was to raise the dose, hospitalize her and keep raising the dose. They currently have her loaded up on Seroquel and made her cold turkey off klonopin last night. This would be a six month commitment.

With her medical needs and her traumatic psych history, I fear Alison will not survive at Western State, especially not for six months. I have contacted her attorney, as well as a CCHR Representative, and I will request a Mindfreedom Shield Activation at her request, but we need all the support, assistance and suggestions of the survivor community right now.

"Sexual side effects occurring in response to taking antidepressant medications are more common than previously reported and may not always resolve once the medication has been discontinued. Informed consent regarding the use of these medications is most effectively accomplished when all professionals responsible for a patients care are educated about these side effects and work collaboratively to educate patients, thus increasing their ability to make an informed choice. The frequency with which the medications are prescribed, the evidence that sexual side effects have been underestimated, and the deleterious effects that such medication side effects may have on treatment and patient functioning make it imperative that psychologists educate themselves in order to best help those whom they serve. This entails a necessary expansion of psychologists knowledge base and scope of practice. At the video he claims:

"These effects have been used by medical scientists. these drugs have been promoted in same cases as treatment for premature ejaculation. Martin Kafka, a Harvard psychiatrist, has promoted the use of these drugs to reduce sexual impulsivity in sexual offenders."

I have wrote about Martin Kafka's treatment at this post.

It is very strange that this "treatment" is being used since 1996 and psychiatrists are still denying that SSRI do cause sexual problems or claiming that "I never heard about that in my clinical experience" is so common. This is not a recent finding.

As I said at the post:

I've stressed "deviant sexual thoughts and fantasies" because it's widely reported on SSRI-sex Yahoo group people claiming that their normal sexual fantasies and thoughts have been altered or disappeared.
Claiming that "SSRIs may help alter a dysfunctional serotonergic system" is not a good explanation. Why on earth people who have conventional sexual fantasies are also affected when they take SSRIs?
It's written here:
"Since serotonine affects sexual appetite,..." and this is what really happens along with changes in sexual thoughts and fantasies which should be investigated because normal people are having sexual problems such as anorgasmia, lost of libido, lack of sexual thoughts and fantasies even after years off SSRIs.
It should be considered as a serious iatrogenic condition and not praised because it can fix paraphilias."

Feb. 7, 2004 - In memory of Traci Johnson - Cymbalta victim

Traci Johnson, a healthy volunteer, joined Cymbalta's Eli-Lilly urinary incontinence clinical trial in early January, 2004 in a clinic at Indiana University Medical Center.
In February, 7 her body was found. She hung herself by a scarf from a shower rod at Eli-Lily's facilities.

ODD "Oppositional Defiant Disorder" a child disease to be treated with Ritalin

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry wrote an alert about this disease:
"In children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), there is an ongoing pattern of uncooperative, defiant, and hostile behavior toward authority figures that seriously interferes with the youngster's day to day functioning.
All children are oppositional from time to time, particularly when tired, hungry, stressed or upset. They may argue, talk back, disobey, and defy parents, teachers, and other adults. Oppositional behavior is often a normal part of development for two to three year olds and early adolescents.
However, openly uncooperative and hostile behavior becomes a serious concern when it is so frequent and consistent that it stands out when compared with other children of the same age and developmental level and when it affects the child's social, family, and academic life."

In children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), there is an ongoing pattern of uncooperative, defiant, and hostile behavior toward authority figures that seriously interferes with the youngster’s day to day functioning. Symptoms of ODD may include:

Frequent temper tantrums
Excessive arguing with adults
Often questioning rules
Active defiance and refusal to comply with adult requests and rules
Deliberate attempts to annoy or upset people
Blaming others for his or her mistakes or misbehavior
Often being touchy or easily annoyed by others
Frequent anger and resentment
Mean and hateful talking when upset
Spiteful attitude and revenge seeking

I thought I would never be shocked by another way the pharmaceutical company finds to sell drugs. I confess that I cannot believe it. Treatment:

"In one study, Ritalin was used to treat children with both ADHD and ODD. Researchers found that when treated with Ritalin, 90% of the children no longer had the ODD. However, this was a poorly executed study. The researchers dropped a number of children from the study because they were too defiant to take their medication as scheduled. Still, even if these children are included as treatment failures, the study still showed a 75% success rate with Ritalin."

UK campaigns for the rights of smokers:evidences that the risks are being overrated

"Health impact of secondhand smoke on bar staff
For many, the clinching argument in favour of a ban on SIPPs was the supposed evidence that SHS presented a measurable health risk to those exposed to it.
There is an enormous amount of published research on the possible health risks of SHS, showing varying and contradictory results.
There is an ongoing epidemiological debate about the risks, if any, of exposure to SHS. Probably the main report affecting public policy on SIPS in the United Kingdom was the Scientific Committee on Tobacco and Health (SCOTH) report published in November 2004.
SCOTH concluded that the increased risk of contracting lung cancer for those exposed to SHS was 24% and for heart disease was 25%.
Even if these numbers are accepted, they are utterly trivial compared to the risks we are willing to accept – or expose others to - in many other areas of our lives.
For example, according to Cancer Research UK, the increased risk of contracting lung cancer if you work in a profession that regularly exposes you to diesel fumes is 47% - twice that of exposure to SHS assumed in SCOTH.
Those living in areas with high levels of nitrogen oxide (usually caused by vehicle emissions) have an increased chance of about 33% of contracting lung cancer. (emphasis mine)
Workers in the ship-building or construction industry have been estimated to have an increased chance of contracting lung cancer of up to 50% - twice that assumed for workers exposed to SHS by SCOTH.
One study even suggests that women who don’t smoke, but have a wood-burning fire at home, may have an increased risk of lung disease in excess of 300%. (emphasis mine)
A French study in 2003 suggested a typical barbecue in one’s garden releases the same number of dioxins that would be emitted from 220,000 cigarettes. (emphasis mine)
So, even if one accepts the SCOTH report’s numbers on the increased risk suffered by those working in smoke-filled pubs and clubs, these risks pale into utter insignificance compared to risks we readily and unquestionably accept elsewhere.
Furthermore, any presumed risk - to those working in environments with SHS - needs to be compared to the alternative. In a deteriorating economy, the alternative for many of those who no longer work in pubs and clubs is measurably less income as a result of unemployment.
In terms of overall public health, there is no evidence to suggest that the SIPPs ban has reduced the overall smoking rate. In fact, in Scotland, smoking has risen amongst the 16-24 year old age group since the ban was imposed.
The conclusion is clear. Even if one accepts the evidence of the SCOTH report, the risks do not justify a comprehensive, blanket ban on SIPPs. This is likely to hit already low paid bar staff, who are risk losing their jobs, hardest."

I'm glad to know that he has already done what he did, keeps moving, rocking and rolling and is no longer at the age of being seen as a possible hyperactive child and the drugs he took were those he wanted to have and when he wanted them. Can you imagine what would be the effects of giving Ritalin to this man when he was a teen? Take a look at the video and see how difficult it is for Tina Turner follow Mick around the stage. He keeps teasing her asking her to follow him.

Antidepressants SSRIs causes suicide: FOX NEWS

Still these drugs are being prescribed and physicians claim that they have been saving millions of lives.
If antidepressants SSRIs are really helping people good for those who were helped. But I hope that the story of the other millions these drugs have destroyed the lives appear more frequently on the mainstream media.

US Government will conduct clinical trial to prove that informed consent can be considered as nocebo for SSRIs

I just came across with this clinical trial that should have started last October but, so sad, it didn't. Informed consent might trigger side efffects is the hypothesis they will study until 2013.

If you are not familiar with the concept of nocebo:

"A nocebo (Latin for "I will harm") is something that should be ineffective but which causes symptoms of ill health. A nocebo effect is an ill effect caused by the suggestion or belief that something is harmful. The term 'nocebo' became popular in the 1990s. Prior to that, both pleasant and harmful effects thought to be due to the power of suggestion were usually referred to as being due to the placebo effect.
Because of ethical concerns, nocebos are not commonly used in medical practice or research. Thus, it is not unexpected that the nocebo effect is not well-established in the scientific literature. However, there are some anecdotes and some studies that are commonly appealed to in the literature to support its validity." (here)

Detailed Description:

"In this study the investigators wish to inquire whether the nature of the explenation given to the patient as part of informed consent has an effect on the prevalence of side-effects. The study will take place in the out-patient clinic at the Shalvata Mental health Center. Three arms are included:
50 patients started on SSRI's will be updated about its common side effects
50 patients started on SSRI's will be updated about its common side effects and will receive an explenation on the nocebo effect
50 patients started on SSRI's will receive an explenation on the nocebo effect, but will not be updated about common side-effects. Nonetheless, they will be informed of severe side-effects.
Following the prescription of an SSRI the subjects will we enter the follow-up phase of the study. They will attend two follow-up meetings: 3 days after the initiation point and one month after the starting point. During each meeting they will be asked to fill the Antidepressant Side-Effect Checklist (ASEC)and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ)."

If you were thinking about informed consent for drugs whose side effects are birth defects, suicidal ideation, violent behaviour, impossible withdrawal I believe you will have to wait.

Raising Awareness: FAIL / Psychiatry has to make a decision

I visited The Carlat Psychiatry blog and came across with this post where you read:

"But when I see a patient in my office, I do just the opposite. I try to maximize the placebo effect. I say things like, "I've had great success with Zoloft in patients like you....I would say you have an 80-90% chance of feeling much better within the next 2 weeks....These drugs are remarkably effective...."

This is from one of the psychiatrists who ís at my blog list and is considered ethical. It seems to me that psychiatry fears stop prescribing these drugs even after all the harms that are already undeniable.

Psychiatry keeps going as if nothing is happening. I don't know what to say. I'm tired and unfortunately nothing I say is considered "evidence". This is sad because I see people getting addicted to clonazepam, a benzodiazepine that is very hard to withdraw, and is being prescribed for any kind of anxiety. They claim "diazepam" doesn't work... they say... they say...
Informed consent? "This drug helped so many of my patients!"

Vets sue CIA Over Mind Control Tests

"For two decades or more during the Cold War, the CIA and the military allegedly plied the unwitting with acid, weed, and dozens of psychoactive drugs, in a series of zany (and sometimes dangerous) mind-control experiments. Now, the Vietnam Veterans of America are suing the agency and the Pentagon for perceived abuses suffered under the so-called "MK-ULTRA" and other projects.

Six veterans are suffering from all kinds of ailments tied to this
"diabolical and secret testing program," according to a statement from the vets’ lawyers, passed on toSpyTalk’s Jeff Stein.

The experiments allegedly included "the use of troops to test nerve gas, psychochemicals, and thousands of other toxic chemical or biological substances, and … the insertion of septal implants in the brains of subjects in … mind control experiments that went awry, leaving many civilian and military subjects with permanent disabilities." Subjects were tested without their consent, the veterans say. And when the trials were over, the government failed to "provide health care or compensation."

In a book published last year, former military psychiatrist James Ketchum describes an Army project — separate from the CIA’s efforts — that took place at Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland. There, he saw test subjects "carry on conversations with various invisible people for as long as 2-3 days." Others "salute latrines" and attempt to "revive a gas mask" that they mistake for a woman.

The feds insist that MK-ULTRA ended, when it was exposed during
Congressional hearings. But interest in chemical mind-control lives along, in some corners of the military-intelligence community. In a 2003 memo, then-Justice Department lawyer John C. Yoo suggesting that
interrogation drugs could be used if their effects were not permanent or profound. Since then, evidence has accumulated that some detainees may have been drugged. "It’s coming back," retired Colonel John Alexander told Sharon."

A message to Mr Obama and US Congress

I just sent a message to Mr Obama at the White House site:

"I just want to remind you that the number of those who are suffering the hell because of psychdrugs like Prozac, Cymbalta, Paxil, Zoloft, Effexor - all the SSRIs and anti-psychotics - is increasing day after day.
Still the US President and congressmen don't care.
You are harming not only US citizens, harming in a hideous way that can be considered as crime against humanity, but the world population.
Will you ever consider health an important issue?
There is no other name for what these drugs are doing: crimes.
Is that all the American government has to offer?"

Why didn't anybody had the idea of telling Obama about it? I'm sure he is not aware of what is happening. Now we can wait for a change.

(How any of these politicians can claim for respect when what they do are below any ethics, dignity and their speeches are made of words, words and words that mean nothing? Still their actions destroy.)

For those who have their lives and health ruined by paroxetine - Seroxat/Paxil/Aropax - and are Catholics it seems that the prayers will have to be done out of the churches because the GSK and, of course, shareholders, politicians and all of those who are profiting while you are suffering are praying there and the Pope are on their side.

I reported this clinical trial here "Eli-Lilly studies SSRIs Cymbalta and Prozac in children 7-17 years old". This clinical trial started in 2009 and will end in 2011.

This clinical trial started in 2009 and will end in 2011. I don't understand why do they need 3 years to test a drug that has already been tested. It would be time for the phase IV of clinical trials:

Phase IV

Phase IV trial is also known as Post Marketing Surveillance Trial. Phase IV trials involve the safety surveillance (pharmacovigilance) and ongoing technical support of a drug after it receives permission to be sold. Phase IV studies may be required by regulatory authorities or may be undertaken by the sponsoring company for competitive (finding a new market for the drug) or other reasons (for example, the drug may not have been tested for interactions with other drugs, or on certain population groups such as pregnant women, who are unlikely to subject themselves to trials). The safety surveillance is designed to detect any rare or long-term adverse effects over a much larger patient population and longer time period than was possible during the Phase I-III clinical trials. Harmful effects discovered by Phase IV trials may result in a drug being no longer sold, or restricted to certain uses: recent examples involvecerivastatin (brand names Baycol and Lipobay), troglitazone (Rezulin) and rofecoxib (Vioxx).

They don't care about the fourth phase of clinical trials and even consider what patients say as "anecdotal evidence". Drugs are supposed to be on the market even if they are killing people. The sole purpose of selling medicines is making money for those powerful few who profit.

Exposing children to these drugs is criminal.

Jim Gottstein grew up in Anchorage, Alaska. After graduating from West Anchorage High School in 1971, he attended the University of Oregon and graduated with honors (BS, Finance) in 1974. From there he attended Harvard Law School graduating in 1978 with a J.D. degree. Mr. Gottstein's career has evolved from emphasizing business matters and public land law, with mental health representation and advocacy as an adjunct, to increasing emphasis on mental health advocacy and representation.

Since late 2002, Mr. Gottstein has devoted the bulk of his time pro bono to the Law Project for Psychiatric Rights (PsychRights) whose mission is to mount a strategic litigation campaign against forced psychiatric drugging and electroshock across the United States. In June of 2006, the Alaska Supreme Court decided Myers v. Alaska Psychiatric Institute, which ruled Alaska's forced drugging procedures unconstitutional. Myers has been called"the most important State Supreme Court decision" on forced drugging in 20 years.

Visit PsychRights. It seems that the vast majority of psychiatrists still didn't understand what these drugs are doing. So we need lawyers to explain them what their prescriptions are doing to their patients. Drugging children the way they are doing is unacceptable and a crime. So we need jurisprudence to deal with it.
